Does sugar cause acne breakouts?

Yoram Harth, MD
By Yoram Harth, MD | 2018-12-17

If you have acne - try to avoid sugar. Sugar is an empty carb without any nutritional value but a lot of negative side effects. It rapidly breaks down into glucose, absorbs into the bloodstream and causes an insulin spike, which increases the risk for more severe acne, just as it does with all other high glycaemic foods (foods that break down rapidly into glucose).

People with acne prone skin should try to avoid all sweetened—and artificially sweetened—including fruit juices, sodas, and foods that contain both sugar and saturated fats like white bread, candy, jam, pizza, and packaged foods in general.
