A bad night’s sleep won’t cause acne, but it does hurt your immune system and its ability to fight acne. Additionally, stress is a known cause of acne breakouts and tends to increase with sleep deprivation.
A few factors of inadequate sleep can cause more acne. When you sleep less than 6 hours a night, your immune system loses its balance resulting in increased inflammation. This increased inflammation will turn small blemishes into larger, more painful pimples. Less sleep will also lead to a cortisol spike in your body, which in turn will cause the skin to produce more sebum and more acne.
But not to worry...you can definitely improve your sleep! All you need is to follow some simple rules. Try to avoid caffeine at least 5 hours before bedtime. Two hours before bedtime, no working on your laptop, no bill paying and no watching action-packed thrillers. Read a book, drink some fruit-based tea, or take a warm bath. Keep your bedroom cool. Very important: change your pillowcase every 3-4 days. A fresh pillowcase will improve your sleep and prevent spreading your acne bacteria to new places. Sleep tight, and enjoy your dreams.
